Charlene (Chou Chou) Raum Merrill of Brookline, Mass., a former Westport resident, died Nov. 29. She was 62.
She grew up in Westport, where her father, Jason Raum, owned and operated Jewels by Jason on Main Street. She was a 1970 graduate of Staples High School.
She married Michael Merrill of Westport in a 1973 ceremony at the Unitarian Church in Westport. Among the attendees was Michael’s mother, film star Bette Davis of Westport. The couple eventually settled in Brookline where she lived for 41 years. She also lived in Captiva, Fla., and Prout’s Neck, Maine.
A real estate agent for many years, she was passionate about her love first for her “boys” and secondly for Brookline. But she always remembered Westport and was a frequent poster on Facebook pages about Westport.
In Brookline, she was an elected Town Meeting member for many years and was active in many civic projects, including the Flag Day Parade. She was well known for election day campaigning through the worst weather. She was a past co-president of the League of Women Voters.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Michael W. Merrill of Brookline, her sons Matthew of Reston, Va., and Cameron of Boston, her brother Warren and sister-in-law Dalia Raum of New York City, her stepfather, Donald Snow of Westport, and her sister-in-law Margot Merrill of Winthrop. Her parents Alix Snow and Jason Raum and her in-laws Bette Davis and Gary Merrill predeceased her.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bell-O’Dea Funeral Home, 376 Washington St., Brookline. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. at Pine Manor College, Founder’s Hall, 400 Heath St., Chestnut Hill, Mass. The burial will be private.
The family said it plans to have additional memorial services in Westport as well as Prouts Neck, Maine and Captiva, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Chou Chou’s name to a college scholarship fund to be created at Staples High School. Donations should be mailed to the Chou Chou Merrill Scholarship c/o Merrill & McGeary, 100 State St., Suite 200, Boston, MA 02109.
