Carl Leaman, chair of Westport’s Green Energy Task Force, and Selectwoman Shelly Kassen, a member of the group, smile as they inspect new solar panels dedicated today at Westport fire headquarters. The installation is one of the first on a municipal building in Connecticut and was partially financed by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Larry Untermeyer for WestportNow.com

It is great to see Westport beginning to use sustainable renewable energy sources. Last night my wife and I were visiting friends on Mill Pond and saw the tide going out over the dam. Twice a day the tide moves in and out there and along Wesports entire beautiful coastline. The water at Mill Pond ran a mill. Why can’t it run generators to provide electricity? I’m not an engineer, but it seems Westport is blessed with a great renewable source of energy - the twice daily movement of the tide.
