Born Sept. 8, 1953, in Forest Hills, N.Y., she attended Forest Hills High School; received a BA in elementary education in 1975 from Emerson College in Boston and a master’s in applied linguistics from Columbia University School of Education in 1984.

She began her career in 1975 as a teacher in local schools in Monrovia, Liberia, following her future husband, Steve Glovinsky, who worked there for the United Nations. They were married in June 1979 and moved to Westport in 1993.

She also had taught at schools in Nepal, U.S. Virgin Islands and Ghana. Returning to the United States in 1987, she was one of the original educational sales representatives, kindergarten through sixth grade, for Wright Group Publishing.

In 2007, she established a jewelry venture with her daughter Joanna, Surya Gems, in which they “repurposed” Indian jewelry for American tastes. She also enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking, entertaining and as occasional crew for her husband’s sailboat races.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two children, Mac Alexander and Joanna Lara; her father, Richard, and a sister, Cynthia.

A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, July 8, at the Unitarian Church in Westport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a literacy initiative, such as Reading is Fundamental (, or Pencils of Promise (
