Canal Road to Close Nov. 8 for Culvert Repairs

Westport First Selectwoman Diane G. Farrell announced today that the town will temporarily close Canal Road in the Saugatuck Shores area on Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for repair of a drainage culvert located at the south side of the intersection of Canal Road and Marsh Court.

The culvert conveys tidal flow between the Saugatuck Canal and the tidal marsh on the opposite side of the road.

Due to the constricted site conditions resulting from the limited roadway width and the location of regulated wetlands on both sides of the roadbed, the maintenance of alternate one-way passage through the project site is not a viable alternative, she said.

In order to expedite the work while maintaining public safety, the Westport Department of Public Works has recommended that the public roadway be closed to through traffic, Farrell said.

Closure of the roadway will require that all access to those properties located east of the canal be made over the private one-way bridge. The bridge weight restrictions will prohibit truck access during the closure period.

Accommodations have been made for the provision of fire protection to the area, the first selectwoman said.

“The closure will create a temporary inconvenience to the neighborhood,” Farrell said. “However the extent and scope of the work involved in the culvert repair project warrants the closure. We appreciate the residents’ understanding and patience on Nov. 8.
