A Westport homeowner awoke early today to the sound of a front door screen window being cut, but managed to scare off the would-be burglar, police said.
The incident at 1:09 a.m. on Bonnie Brook Road touched off a widespread manhunt for the culprit, including use of a K-9 tracking dog, but failed to find the suspect.
Later, at about 6:45 a.m., a nearby homeowner called police to say someone had entered the home overnight while they were sleeping and made off with approximately $4,000 in cash and electronics.
“Entry was made through an unlocked door,” said Lt. David Farrell.
“We request all Westport residents to remain alert to their surroundings and call the Westport Police should anything seem out of place or suspicious. Please lock all doors and leave exterior lights on.”
Police asked anyone who may have information about the incidents to contact the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau at (203)341-6080.
