UPDATE Bill Clinton is returning to Westport next month for the fifth time in 18 years on a familiar mission -– to raise campaign cash, this time in advance of Connecticut’s April 26 presidential primary.
Invitations went out today for a Thursday, April 21 evening fundraiser for his wife, Hillary, at an undisclosed private home, according to Martha Aasen former chair of the Westport Democratic Town Committee. It was later learned the fundraiser will be at the Beachside Avenue home of financier Marc Lasry, who has previously hosted the Clintons and President Obama at his New York home.
The invitation said tickets were available at the supporter level for $2,700—two such primary contributors at $5,400 will also get a photo with the former president – and a limited availability friend category at $1,000.
In addition, there is a co-host category for anyone raising $10,000 in new primary dollars, which also includes a photo with Clinton.
Westport is home to two of Clinton’s—and President Obama’s—biggest supporters—financier Marc Lasry and producer Harvey Weinstein, who have hosted events for both here and in New York
Clinton and his wife, who attended Yale Law School in New Haven, are no strangers to campaign fundraising in Westport.
While president, Clinton made three fundraising visits here—a March 10, 1998 event at the Inn at National Hall hosted by Bob and Yvette Rose; a June 8, 1998 Rose-hosted event at Martha Stewart’s television studio on Newtown Turnpike, and a June 28, 1999 event at the Judy Point Lane of Fran Goldstein and Sandra Wagenfeld.
After leaving the White House, he visited Westport on Aug. 2, 2007 at a fundraising event also hosted by the Roses for his wife’s presidential campaign. He was also here in 1991 when Arkansas governor at a fundraiser at the Westport home of Ann Sheffer and Bill Scheffler.
Hillary Clinton was last in Westport for a March 25, 2008 fundraiser at the home of Kristan Peters-Hamlin.
Before that, she made two visits to Westport in 2004 and 2006 to support former Westport First Selectman Diane Farrell in her two unsuccessful bids for Congress. She also attended an April 3, 2004 fundraiser for herself at the Rose’s home.
In the 2008 Connecticut presidential primary, Hillary Clinton was defeated by Obama. In Westport, the vote totals were 2,288 for Obama and 1,851 for Clinton.
In 1992, Bill Clinton was defeated in an upset visitory by Jerry Brown in the Connecticut primary.
