After an early morning, high speed chase in which a suspect in an SUV tried to sideswipe and ram pursuing officers, Westport police arrested a New Haven man being sought in connection with an attempted car theft from a local driveway, police said.
It was also determined that suspect Jerrell Brodie, 18, was driving a stolen SUV, police said.
They also arrested a juvenile found walking on the road and in connection with the attempted car theft.
According to Lt. David Farrell, the incident began about 1:14 a.m. today when a St. John’s Place homeowner reported three suspicious vehicles on his street and a man trying to get into his vehicle.
“The homeowner provided a description of the suspect vehicles as two dark colored SUV’s and a dark colored sedan,” said Farrell. “Officers observed three vehicles matching the description leaving the area approaching Route 15.”
He said that as officers attempted to stop the suspect vehicles, all three fled at a high rate of speed. Officers pursued one of the vehicles north on Weston Road.
“The vehicle was described as a black Ford Edge with California license plates,” Farrell said.
The pursuit was terminated due to high speeds and icy road conditions, and afterwards officers located a juvenile male walking in the area of Weston Road and Route 15, where the pursuit began.
According to the arrest report, the juvenile was found to be involved with the attempted theft..
“While officers were on scene with the juvenile, they observed the same Ford Edge with California license plates from the earlier pursuit drive by them on Weston Road,” Farrell said.
Officers then pursued the vehicle again onto Merritt Parkway northbound, and the vehicle “attempted to sideswipe and ram the pursuing officers,” Farrell said.
The suspect vehicle eventually stopped on Route 15 near the North Avenue Bridge overpass, where Brodie was taken into custody. It was quickly learned that the Ford Edge had been reported stolen in East Haven.
Farrell added that another vehicle was stolen from a Colonial Road home overnight, and that it was later involved in a pursuit with the New Haven and East Haven Police departments. One juvenile was taken into custody in that arrest.
Farrell said Westport detectives are working closely with the New Haven and East Haven departments to determine in the incidents are related.
Brodie was charged with criminal attempt at assault in the first degree, first-degree reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer, second-degree larceny, two counts of reckless operation, two counts of engaging police in pursuit, two counts of traveling fast for conditions and driving without a license. He is being held in lieu of a $75,000 bond, and no court date was given.
Police charged the juvenile with conspiracy to commit larceny in the second degree. He was transferred to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center.
