Born in Bridgeport on Jan. 6, 1919, she was the 10th and last child of Lewis Henry Allen and Elizabeth J. Blanchfield Allen of Westport.
She graduated from Staples High School in 1936. She was married to John H. (Jack) Schaefer on April 11, 1942 and they lived together in the Greens Farms-Westport area for 53 years, until his death Nov. 18, 1995.

She was a lifelong communicant of Westport’s Christ and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and was active in the Women’s Auxiliary and later in the Altar Guild.
In her earlier years, Ann’s hobbies included crocheting, rug hooking, vegetable gardening, reading mysteries and playing solitaire.
In her 80s, she learned how to use a computer and e-mail relatives and friends. For many years she was a faithful walker at Sherwood Island Park.
Ann was descended from some of the earliest settlers of southern Fairfield County, whose numerous members ranged from ship captains and large landowners to farmers and fishermen.
Many served their country as soldiers, including her great-great grandfather, William Allen, in the Revolutionary War, and her grandfather, Charles Wilson Allen, in the Civil War.
The Allens were related to many other old Fairfield County clans, especially the Mills, Batterson and Baker families.
Ann is survived by her son, Jeffrey John Schaefer, and his wife Susan Mahn Schaefer, of Westport; her daughter, Jane Ann Schaefer Johngren, and her husband Peter M. Johngren, of Hartwick, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Emily Ruth Johngren Ward, and her husband Robert Ward, of Homer, Ark.; Michael Peter Johngren, and his wife Jeanne Muller Johngren, of Princeton, N.J.; and Rebecca Lee Schaefer, and her fiancé Nathaniel Kohl, of Westport; and her great-granddaughter, Maia Wood Johngren, of Princeton.
She is also survived by her niece Mary Allen Gordon and her nephew Philip Blanchfield Allen, both of Vermont; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and special cousins Elizabeth Allen Godfrey and Helen Betts.
Ann was predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth Blanchfield, Frances Ellen, Eva May, Dorothy Evelyn, and May Allen; and her brothers Edward Wilson, Ralph Lewis, Harold James and Irving James Allen.
Ann’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service to be held on Friday, Dec. 4, at 11:30 a.m. at Christ and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 55 Myrtle Ave. The Rev. John H. Branson, III, rector, will officiate.
Following the service, all present are invited to join Ann’s family in the Great Hall for refreshment, remembrance and fellowship.
