Westport Police arrested a Westport Department of Public Works employee Friday for drunk driving that caused an Easton Road accident Oct. 1, police said today.
Paul Byron, 54, of the Sandy Hook section of Newtown, turned himself in after learning there was an active warrant for his arrest following an investigation of hospital toxicology reports on the one-vehicle accident. According to Lt. Arthur Belile, Byron’s Ford 2015 SUV had crashed into a tree.
“As emergency personnel tended to the driver, the investigating officer took note of the driver’s glassy eyes, slurred speech and an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the breath of the driver, identified as Byron,” Belile said.
Toxicology reports said Byron was driving with a blood alcohol content of .23 percent, nearly triple the state’s legal threshold of .08 percent, Belile said.
Byron was released after posting a $50,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
