The Halloween decorations at the Mall family house on Ludlow Street is a neighborhood tradition. Homeowner Lou Mall said, “We’ve been doing this since we moved into this house in 2000. It’s an added celebration for us since our daughter Tessa, a Staples High School graduate Class of 2015 and now in her junior year at the University of Colorado, was born on Oct. 30.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for

According to WWCC Executive Director Matthew Mandell, the funds donated come from proceeds from the Slice of Saugatuck festival that drew 2,500 persons and 54 participating businesses.

The donation brings Slice of Saugatuck gifts to the total amount donated from this and past Slice Festivals to HWH to $24,000, Mandell said.

Mandell said the WWCC also donated $500 to Remarkable Steam, the nonprofit entity that created and runs the MakerFaire, which once again participated in this year’s festival.

Malloy Criticizes Budget Outline; Fasano Calls Him ‘Irrelevant’

By Mark Pazniokas

The syncopated rollout of the General Assembly’s bipartisan budget deal got a harshly skeptical review today from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who either will be the final arbiter of what legislative leaders say will be a satisfactory ending to Connecticut’s long-running budget drama — or just a loud voice from the balcony.

Two days after House and Senate leaders announced an agreement in principle, questions abound about the depth and breadth of spending cuts, the distribution of municipal aid, the source of new revenues, and the extent to which collective bargaining and other labor laws will be changed.

Malloy, a Democrat struggling to resolve the fourth and final two-year budget of his tumultuous two terms as governor of a state yet to recover from the Great Recession of 2008, said he will not accept a budget briefing from legislative leaders until they can produce a document answering those questions.

“I certainly assumed I would have seen a budget well before this hour today — which is what, 46 hours since the budget was announced?” said Malloy, who spoke to reporters from behind his desk at the State Capitol. “In reality, without a line-by-line document with hard numbers, there is no balanced budget to discuss.”

Staples Soccer Overpowers New Canaan Image
Two second half goals — one by Patricio Perez Elorza, the other by Timmy Liles — and a penalty kick save by Ry Cohen with the score still 1-0 powered Staples today over New Canaan. The win — coupled with Central’s 1-1 draw with Trumbull, and Ridgefield’s 5-1 defeat of Westhill — assures the Wreckers of an FCIAC playoff berth. The eight-team tournament begins Thursday. Exact seedings will be determined after Monday’s final regular season games. The Wreckers host St. Joseph (4 p.m.) on Senior Day. Pictured is Sam Lilies (19) in action.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) J.C.
