Celebrating the 5th Birthday of Westport’s Plastic Bag Ban

WestportNow.com Image
This week’s fifth anniversary of passage of Westport’s ban on plastic bags at retail was celebrated by members of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) who led the effort and two District 4 constituents who suggested the ban—Don Wergeles (far left) and Mel Sorcher (far right). Pictured with them are (l-r) Liz Milwe, Jeff Wieser and Jonathan Cunitz. Gene Seidman is absent. Wieser, the only one who remains on the RTM, said, “With the co-sponsorship of Steve Rubin, Lois Schine, John McCarthy, Anne-Marie Flynn and Joyce Colburn, the RTM passed the ordinance by a vote of 28-5-1. Since that time, it is estimated that Westport has kept more than 10 million plastic bags out of the waste stream.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Stepping Up to the Bar, Finally, at Red Barn

WestportNow.com Image
It took more than 30 years, but it was step up to the bar time, finally, at Westport’s Red Barn restaurant today. Final approval came earlier in the day in the Town of Westport’s regulatory process for the first full service bar in the iconic restaurant’s history. The process began with Planning and Zoning approval in December. David Royce, 82, Town Activist

WestportNow.com Image
David Royce, longtime activist for various causes in Westport—including taking part in weekly peace vigils in Westport’s center—died Friday in Greenwich Hospital after a two-year battle with lymphoma, according to his wife, Nina. He was 82. An inveterate letter writer to local newspapers, Royce, a Harvard graduate, in 1982 picketed outside the Westport News office to protest what he said was its refusal to print his letter taking exception to an editorial on revaluation. In 1987, he was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge when he refused to relinquish the microphone at a session of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM). The charge was later dismissed. Royce said he took pride in a 1974 campaign he launched to have the newly shuttered Bedford Elementary School converted to a new Town Hall. He was initially rebuffed, but Town Hall opened there in 1978. He told a 2008 RTM meeting: “I was here before most of you and I’ll be here after most of you leave. I love Westport. In fact, the reason you are sitting here tonight instead of in a brick box by the river is because a long time ago I alone fought for the use of this former school instead of a new building as our Town Hall.” WestportNow.com file photo

FBI Supervisor: Wynkoop ‘Sounded to Me Like Scarlet O’Hara’

WestportNow.com Image
There was an overflow crowd today at the Southport Congregational Church for the funeral service for Susan Walton Wynkoop, former FBI special agent and former president of the Westport Historical Society who died Monday at age 60. Terrance Cox, Wynkoop’s supervisor at the FBI when they worked on the New York bank robbery task force, said, “It was Susan’s job to research bank robberies, identify the perpetrator and hunt them down. When I met her in New York and heard that southern accent, it sounded to me like Scarlett O’Hara—and it seemed the longer she was in New York, the stronger her accent.” Cox reminisced about Wynkoop’s work ethic and self-confidence mixed with a wry, self-deprecating sense of humor. Westport’s Tyler Hicks Wins Second Pulitzer

WestportNow.com Image
UPDATE Westport’s Tyler Hicks today won a Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography for “his compelling pictures that showed skill and bravery in documenting the unfolding terrorist attack at Westgate mall in Kenya.” His coverage of the September 2013 Nairobi attack also won him second place in the World Press Photo competition in February. (See WestportNow Feb. 14, 2014) Hicks, who was in the Times newsroom in New York when the announcement was made, said: “It’s a huge honor to be recognized in this way, and it’s a reminder to me that these stories, however far away and however remote, are being noticed and that the risks that photographers all over the world take in going to dangerous places are being acknowledged and rewarded.” It was the second Pulitzer for Hicks, a 1988 Staples High School graduate. In 2009, he was part of the Times team that won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as was fellow Westporter and 1991 Staples graduate Lynsey Addario. Celebrating a Life Saved at Bedford Middle School

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Bedford Middle School today hosted an event celebrating the saving of the life of Adam Greenlee (l), 11. On Jan. 14, the sixth grader fell ill while in gym class and was unresponsive. Two school nurses responded and began CPR while Principal Adam Rosen grabbed the school’s AED defibrillator. Following the protocols they learned in training, they shocked Adam’s heart back into rhythm. Two Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiologists honored the school staff as well as police, fire, and EMS personnel who responded to the call. With Adam are his parents, Adam Sr. and Rene, and siblings Alex, 8, and Abby, 11 both Long Lots Elementary School students. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
