Biggest and Brightest

WestportNow.com Image
Friday night’s full moon, as seen from Westport’s Compo Beach, was said to be the biggest and brightest full moon of the entire year. As the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon from days long ago when hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. It was the biggest and brightest because this moon’s path around the earth made it about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com. Peter Powell: Reprising 22 Years in Westport

WestportNow.com Image
The Rev. Peter R, Powell, who retired last month after 22 years of service as the head of Homes with Hope, formerly known as the Interfaith Housing Association, today provided a retrospective to the Westport Rotary Club of the many changes in Westport over those years.  He noted the changing demographics of the town—“few of us are from here originally.” And when hard times hit, often in the form of mental illness or drug addiction, the family is not here to fall back on, he said. Early on, Powell said, “I was accused of importing homeless people from Norwalk and Grand Central.”  The facts soon emerged that homelessness was more common in the Westport area than was realized. Powell has been a Westport Rotary Club member since 1995. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
