Westport’s Talbots Mens to Close After Almost 5-Year Run

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Talbots Mens on Main Street will close after an almost five-year run. Also closing is Talbots Kids at 170 Parker Harding Plaza. The Boston-based company said Friday it will close its 78 men’s and children’s apparel stores and focus on its core middle-age female customer. The Westport Talbots Mens—the company’s first such store and the only one in Connecticut—opened on April 3, 2003, with a glittering champagne reception hosted by Arnold B. Zetcher, chairman, president and CEO of Talbots. Westport police officers modeled the clothing at the charity fund-raising event. Talbots women’s store in the former Remarkable Book Shop location a short distance away on Main Street is unaffected. It, along with Talbots Kids, opened in 1990. The men’s store site was formerly occupied by The Limited and longtime Westporters will remember it as a Mobil gas station. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Trench boxes along Westport’s Lincoln Street were empty today after CL&P crews completed installation overnight and early today of the second set of conduits under the Saugatuck River that will eventually carry the new Middletown-to-Norwalk high voltage power line. The critical operation involved assembling and pulling 1,600 feet of conduit pipes from the west side of the river at Lincoln Street to the east side at Imperial Avenue. The first conduit was completed in November. (See WestportNow Nov. 2, 2007) Lincoln Street residents have complained repeatedly about the work, which they said has disrupted their lives and in some cases damaged their homes.
