Hidden Long Island

WestportNow.com Image
Westporters looking toward Long Island at dusk today saw a large cloud obscuring the view. Westport weather wizard Jacob Meisel, Staples ’13, now a Harvard freshman, offered this explanation: “That looks like a low level cumulus cloud over Long Island, which occurs in scenarios like today where you have extremely cold air rushing down from the north over air which is cold but not quite as cold (it is more mild because of the ocean influence). When you are by the coast (or, in the case of Long Island, an island with little elevation that tends to have surface temperatures similar to those over the ocean), any evaporation or warmer air near the surface rises up but gets trapped and condenses very quickly with the frigid air above that is moving in from the cold front. Cold air moves in faster aloft because there is less friction from land masses, etc. So the relatively mild air from the water gets trapped quickly by the very cold air aloft, thus creating clouds much closer to the surface than usual and that can create either foggy conditions or just clouds right above the surface that you would typically see farther up in the sky.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Paul Schreiner for WestportNow.com
