Leaving Troubles at Home, Malloy Takes the DNC Stage

By Mark Pazniokas

Philadelphia — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy condemned the Republican ticket of Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence as bullies in a speech tonight to the Democratic National Convention, winning cheers by noting Connecticut welcomed the Syrian refugee family Pence turned away from Indiana.

Trump “has insulted anyone who doesn’t agree with him or doesn’t look like him. Women. Mexican-Americans. Veterans. Muslim-Americans. The LGBT community and people with disabilities. You name ‘em, Donald Trump has bullied them,” Malloy said. “I know something about bullies. And I know why we must stand up to them.”

Malloy, 61, a second-term governor struggling at home with a 24-percent approval rating and fresh off the disclosure that a federal grand jury is investigating how Democrats financed his re-election, is playing a welcome role this week as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and as a surrogate for Hillary Clinton.

He shrugged off a question about whether he arrived here under a cloud.

“Participants will establish a better understanding of the role of the police department in the community,” said Lt. Jillian Cabana, detective commander.

She said the academy can accommodate 24 community members who will participate in classes run by officers and are designed to take them through the various aspects of law enforcement.

In addition to the classes, Cabana said, participants will have the opportunity to ride with an officer from the patrol division and to receive CPR/AED certification.

Stop & Shop Parking Lot Surprise

WestportNow.com Image
A forced main sewer line break today at 1790 Post Road East sent some of the overflow into the Stop & Shop parking lot. Town crews were on scene to repair the break. Sewer force mains are necessary when gravity flow is not sufficient to move water runoff and sewage through a gravity line. Force mains move wastewater under pressure by using pumps or compressors.. Honoring Our Heritage: 22 Crooked Mile Road

WestportNow.com Image
The owners of the house at 22 Crooked Mile Road are the newest recipients of a Westport Historical Society (WHS) historical plaque. Bob Weingarten, WHS plaque historian, presented the plaque to Robert G. Shaw, who has lived in the house with wife Katerina since 2005. According to Weingarten, the 1930-built house, was built for the renowned artist, Charles Prendergast (1863-1948). According to Shaw, Prendergast’s widow donated her husband’s art to the Williams College Museum of Art, which now houses the largest collection of Prendergast’s work.
