Selectmen Deny Saugatuck Sewer Extension

By James Lomuscio

Acting in its capacity as the town’s Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA), the Board of Selectmen today voted 2 to 1 denying an application to build a controversial 1,500-foot sewer extension in Saugatuck.

Developer Felix Charney (at last week’s meeting). Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

The extension was the needed first step in developer Felix Charney’s plan to construct 155 rental housing units on Hiawatha Lane Extension. The vote came after last week’s often contentious three-hour hearing on the issue. (See WestportNow July 21, 2016)

First Selectman Jim Marpe and Selectwoman Helen Garten voted to deny the request, and Second Selectman Avi Kaner was the dissenter.

The reasons for the denial, spelled out and suggested by Town Attorney Ira Bloom, was the status of the area’s sewage pump station.

Real Estate Report: ‘Hubbard Clause’ Appearing More Often

By Judy Szablak

Special to WestportNow

We are beginning to see more offers that include a “Hubbard clause” in Westport these days, and that may be because of the state of the market.

WestportNow.com Image
Featured Home:This home at 33 Sherwood Drive is listed at $3.3 million. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Photo courtesy of The Higgins Group, Westport

Currently, there are three homes that are under deposit"with a Hubbard clause, and their average price is $812,333. At any given time, we normally see just one in the entire town.

A Hubbard clause is when a buyer places an offer on another home subject to the sale of their own property. The clause itself is in direct reference to the buyer’s home sale.

In other words, the buyers have not yet secured a purchaser for their own home. They will need to effect that sale, and the equity from it in order to complete the purchase on their next home.

NYT: ‘Sex, Fear and Video Surveillance’ at Bridgewater

Westport’s Bridgewater Associates is like a “cauldron of fear and intimidation,” according to an employee of the world’s largest hedge fund quoted by The New York Times.

In a front page story in Wednesday’s edition available online tonight, the newspaper said it had obtained through Freedom of Information requests a 34-year-old employee’s complaint made to the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, which it said has not been previously reported.

The complaint describes “an atmosphere of constant surveillance by video and recordings of all meetings — and the presence of patrolling security guards — that silence employees who do not fit the Bridgewater mold,” the Times said.

The employee contends that his male supervisor sexually harassed him for about a year by propositioning him for sex and talking about sex during work trips, according to the report.

Back-to-School Support Program Begins Aug. 8

Westport’s 2016 Back-to-School Program, offering gift cards to income-eligible families who have children in the Westport Public Schools, will commence Monday, Aug. 8, town officials announced today.

According to Human Services Director Sarah Heath, families can use the card to purchase new backpacks and school supplies at retailers such as Staples, etc. Also, a limited number of Payless gift cards letting children start the school year with a new pair of shoes will be available from the Salvation Army.

Last year, 152 Westport students – the equivalent of eight full classrooms—from 102 income-eligible families received back-to-school supplies, as well as gift cards for a new pair of shoes, Heath said.

Adding that donations at any level are greatly appreciated, Heath said tax deductible monetary gifts should be made payable to the Town of Westport/DHS Family Programs and be mailed to Department of Human Services, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.

Granger at the Movies: ‘Star Trek: Beyond,’ ‘Our Little Sister,’ ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

Back in the 1960s, I became an avid fan of Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek,” which not only boldly explored new worlds but also set forth challenging concepts, tackling relevant social issues with philosophical ingenuity and inventive diplomacy.

WestportNow.com Image

Yes, the sci-fi sets were tacky but provocative ideas and redemptive life-lessons flourished.

Several movie franchises continued in that vein but, under the stewardship of J.J. Abrams, character complexity has become secondary to continual conflict and spectacle, sacrificing much of the emotional satisfaction.

In “Star Trek: Beyond,” there’s Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto), Dr. “Bones” McCoy (Karl Urban), along with Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Hikaru Sulu (John Cho) and Pavel Chekhov (the late Anton Yelchin, who tragically died at age 27).

New In-Town Digs for Suzuki Music School

The Suzuki Music School of Westport, for 18 years one of the country’s leading, nonprofit community music schools, will move to a larger in-town location Aug. 1, school officials announced.

The school, dedicated to the family oriented Suzuki method of music instruction, will relocate from 212 Post Road West to 7,000 square feet of space at 246 Post Road East in the Colonial Green complex, officials said. It is the former home of the Music Theatre of Connecticut MainStage (MTC).

According to Andrew Smith, the school’s director, the new central location will mark a turning point in the school’s role within the town.

“This puts the school at the heart of the Westport music scene, and we couldn’t be prouder,” Smith said. “Whether or not you have children who are interested in music, we would encourage music lovers everywhere to come to one of our events and see for themselves.”

Westporters Bit Players in DNC WikiLeaks

Westporters were bit players in the 19,000 internal Democratic Party emails released by WikiLeaks.

The release set off a frenzy on the eve of the party’s Philadelphia nominating convention and forced the resignation of the party chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

A search for “Westport” on the WikiLeaks DNC emails website brought 17 results.

Among them was an exchange of emails seeking advice about a “commuter bicycle” purchase from Jordan Kaplan, finance chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

Leaving Troubles at Home, Malloy Takes the DNC Stage

By Mark Pazniokas

www.ctmirror.org

Philadelphia — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy condemned the Republican ticket of Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence as bullies in a speech tonight to the Democratic National Convention, winning cheers by noting Connecticut welcomed the Syrian refugee family Pence turned away from Indiana.

Trump “has insulted anyone who doesn’t agree with him or doesn’t look like him. Women. Mexican-Americans. Veterans. Muslim-Americans. The LGBT community and people with disabilities. You name ‘em, Donald Trump has bullied them,” Malloy said. “I know something about bullies. And I know why we must stand up to them.”

Malloy, 61, a second-term governor struggling at home with a 24-percent approval rating and fresh off the disclosure that a federal grand jury is investigating how Democrats financed his re-election, is playing a welcome role this week as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and as a surrogate for Hillary Clinton.

He shrugged off a question about whether he arrived here under a cloud.
