Police-Youth Club Seeks Students Members

Eighth and ninth grade students are invited to join Westport Police-Youth Club now in its second year, Westport Police Department and Westport Youth Services officials announced today.

Established last fall to encourage a better understanding between police and youths, the program is funded through the state Office of Policy and Management and its Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee.

According to local officials, club activities include monthly meetings, team building, and community service opportunities for youth and Westport police officers to work side by side.

“By bringing students and police together in a non-enforcement capacity for meaningful discussion, the group hopes to continue building off the success of the first year,” the announcement says. “Together we can further strengthen a healthy community with a foundation of mutual respect.”

Historical Society Exhibit Envisions Town 50 Years from Now

The Westport Historical Society (WHS) on Friday will mark the opening of “06880+50,” a futuristic exhibit based on area architects’ imaginings of the town 50 years from now.

The opening reception is from 6 to 8 p.m., and the exhibit runs through Dec. 31.

The architects’ visions include: compact smart homes with elevators; a high-speed ferry from Westport to Manhattan; a bike path connecting downtown to the Saugatuck train station; and out-of-the-way lots for self-parking, driverless cars, according to WHS officials.

Barbara Peck, WHS assistant director, said the participants range from independent architects to member of large firms.

Himes: ‘My Head Buzzing’ Over Trump U.N. Speech Image
U.S. Rep. Jim Himes today told a meeting of the Westport Rotary Club that “the political environment in Washington today is utter upheaval, confusion, and unpredictability.” Referring to President Trump’s U.N. speech today, he said, “I’m walking around my head buzzing a little bit because going in front of the General Assembly and threatening to destroy a country indicates an absence of prudence in the enormous (war-making) power the president has.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for

Malloy: It’s Time for ‘the Courage to Compromise’ on Connecticut’s Budget

By Keith M. Phaneuf

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy today reaffirmed his opposition to the new state budget, arguing it would raid the pension funds, decimate higher education and leave the City of Hartford vulnerable to fiscal insolvency.

And while the Democratic governor urged all sides to compromise — and said he probably would have to accept some GOP proposals he opposes — Malloy also said he would not accept a plan to scale back scheduled payments into the state employees’ pension fund.

“This is serious hard work to put the state back in balance with respect to its unfunded, long-term obligations,” Malloy told reporters. “And what do we get? We get an invitation to make it worse.”

That “invitation,” according to the governor, was included in the two-year budget that the Senate and House approved on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
