Coastal Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service said a Coastal Flood Advisory remains is in effect for the Westport area from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today.

It said to expect tidal departures 2 to 2.5 feet above astronomical tides.

Minor coastal flooding is expected for this morning’s high tide cycles.

Additional minor coastal flooding is possible for tonight’s and Wednesday morning’s high tide cycles, the Weather Service said.

Board of Finance Has First Look at Budget

Westport’s Board of Finance tonight pored over First Selectman Jim Marpe’s proposed $91,639,626 budget for 2016-17, a .8 percent or $727,396 increase over the current year.

It was the first of the finance board’s three-night informal review of the budget, with tonight’s focus on the police and fire department budgets, plus the town’s contribution to pensions and the OPEB (other post employment benefits) account.

“A lot of these numbers are new to us, and we’ll be meeting this week with all the town departments,” said Michael Rea, finance board vice chairman.

Marpe’s proposed budget combined with the Board of Education’s would amount to an overall town budget of $205,588,568, a 1.49 percent increase.

Police Chief Dale Call to Retire This Year

Westport Police Chief Dale E. Call (c) tonight informed the Board of Finance he intends to resign this year after 32 years on the force. He made the announcement at a Town Hall budget review session. Call, 53, was appointed chief by former Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff in 2011, replacing Alfred Fiore, who retired. (See WestportNow Oct. 4, 2011).The son of the late Westport Police Department Inspector George E. Call and Marjorie Call, Call joined the department in January 1984, was promoted to sergeant in May 1993, inspector in June 2001, administrative lieutenant in 2004, and detective commander in 2006 before becoming deputy chief in September 2007. Schools on Early Dismissal

Westport schools will close early today because of the weather, school officials announced.

It said all evening activities have been canceled.

Staples High School will dismiss at 11:45 a.m., Bedford Middle, Coleytown Middle, and Saugatuck Elementary at 12:15 p.m., and Coleytown Elementary, Greens Farms, Kings Highway, and Long Lots at 1 p.m.

Delayed Opening—Not Snow, But Safety

Chipotle Mexican Grill, 376 Post Road East, has a delayed opening today, not because of the weather but for a food safety meeting. A sign on the front doot says it will open at 3 p.m.  Chipotle restaurants across the country are closing for several hours today for a company-wide safety briefing after outbreaks of norovirus and E.coli sickened customers. The company says customers can tap into the briefing through Twitter and Periscope starting at noon. Man Held in Senor Salsa Crash

Police arrested a 52-year-old Westport man for allegedly driving his car into the front of the Senor Salsa restaurant and then fleeing, police said today.

William M. Boland was arrested Friday for the incident that occurred at 221 Post Road West, on Jan. 23. (See WestportNow Jan. 23, 2016)

Initial reports said the front license plate was found in the wreckage, but a police report said Boland was traced through a witness who wrote down Boland’s license plate as he left the scene.

It said the witness later positively identified Boland in a photograph line up. However, when initially confronted, Boland wrote and signed a sworn statement denying he was the driver, police said.
