BMS ‘Penny Wars’ Raise $11,800 for Charity

“The Great Penny Wars” have been fought again at Westport’s Bedford Middle School, and the winner is Westport’s community giving organizations.

Taking part in this year’s battle were 270 eighth graders who waged a friendly but spirited competition to see which teams, or “pods,” could raise the most funds for the annual effort.

When it was all over, it turned out this year’s competition was the most successful in the 12-year history of the program, raising $11,800, organizers said. The funds will aid the holiday gift drive of the Westport Department of Human Services and other charitable programs.

Since the program’s 2004 inception, more than $80,000 has been donated — testament to the spirit of giving among Bedford students.

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 15 Belden Place, off Main Street and across from Veterans Green, is in process. Built in 1930, the 1-3/4 story cape has 1,382-square feet, is situated on an .06-acre property and last changed ownership, according to Town Assessor records, in April 1984. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Himes to Head Centrist Dem Group

By Ana Radelat

www.ctmirror.org

Washington – Rep. Jim Himes was elected today to head the centrist New Democrat Coalition in the next Congress.

Himes had been one of four vice chairmen of the coalition.

“I would like to thank my fellow New Dems for the trust they have placed in me to lead this coalition and fight for them and the American people next Congress,” Himes said. “The future will bring unimagined opportunities, innovation and change. But, as the presidential election showed, change often leaves too many Americans behind. I’m thrilled to have the chance to lead the most forward-looking group of members in the Congress, all of whom are dedicated to defending and supporting those who get left behind.”

Created in 1997, the New Democrat Coalition say’s it’s a “moderate” and “pro-growth” group with about 50 members.

Medical Examiner: Ulcers Caused Tina’s Death

Christine “Tina” Wessel, the homeless woman found dead Tuesday in a shed behind the Westport Center for Senior Activities, died of gastrointestinal bleeding due to ulcers, the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner said today.

“The cause was upper gastrointestinal bleed due to gastric and duodenal ulcer, peptic ulcer disease, pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis due to venous stasis ulcer,” a spokeswoman said. A venous stasis ulcer is usually caused by wounds of the legs, sometimes referred to as a leg ulcer.

Wessel, 63, a longtime fixture in the downtown, was often seen asking for money in the rear parking lot of CVS on Post Road East and the Baldwin parking lot.

Easily distinguishable by her long gray blond hair and a pronounced limp, she has been warmly remembered as polite, gracious and sporting a friendly smile when being offered a handout as little as a dollar.

Key Lawmaker: Need to Talk About Raising Revenues

By Keith M. Phaneuf

www.ctmirror.org

As analysts outlined a grim picture today that could include further cuts to state social services and reversing recent enhancements in local aid and transportation, one key lawmaker insisted officials must discuss raising revenue in 2017.

Though it is premature to target specific measures — such as tax increases, fee hikes or tolls — Rep. Toni E. Walker, D-New Haven, said trying to offset surging debt costs in the next state budget solely with cuts “is going to be devastating” to Connecticut.

“I believe there are things out there that we need to look at, that we have turned up our nose to” over the past year, she said. “We have to look now, and we have to look at who is suffering in this state.”

Walker, a New Haven Democrat who co-chairs the Appropriations Committee, made her comments after a three-hour briefing on budget trends by executive and legislative branch analysts.
