An iced tea can left in a Westport stolen car recovered in Waterbury led to the arrest Tuesday of a Waterbury man, police said today.

Officers arrested Stafford Angus, 19, at the Waterbury Police Department where he was being held after the Connecticut Forensic Science Laboratory matched fingerprints on the can to Angus.

According to Lt. David Farrell, the car had been discovered stolen at 9 a.m. Feb. 24 from the driveway of Silver Brook Road home. It was recovered on March 10 in Waterbury.

“The car was then towed back to the Westport Police Department, so that Detectives could examine it in the hopes of retrieving physical evidence,” Farrell said. “One of the items found in the car was an Arizona Iced Tea can, which the complainant said was not in the car at the time of the theft.”

BMS ‘Penny Wars’ Raise $11,800 for Charity

“The Great Penny Wars” have been fought again at Westport’s Bedford Middle School, and the winner is Westport’s community giving organizations.

Taking part in this year’s battle were 270 eighth graders who waged a friendly but spirited competition to see which teams, or “pods,” could raise the most funds for the annual effort.

When it was all over, it turned out this year’s competition was the most successful in the 12-year history of the program, raising $11,800, organizers said. The funds will aid the holiday gift drive of the Westport Department of Human Services and other charitable programs.

Since the program’s 2004 inception, more than $80,000 has been donated — testament to the spirit of giving among Bedford students.
