Granger at the Movies: ‘The Founder,’ ‘Fences,’ ‘Assassin’s Creed’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

In “The Founder,” Michael Keaton (“Spotlight,” “Birdman”) plays ruthless Ray Kroc in this backstory of the ubiquitous McDonald’s franchise, an innovative, assembly-line idea that revolutionized the fast food industry. Image

In 1952, when traveling salesman Kroc is peddling milkshake machines to drive-ins in the Midwest, he gets a huge order from a roadside restaurant in San Bernardino, California, run by brothers Maurice “Mack” (John Carroll Lynch) and Richard “Dick” (Nick Offerman) McDonald.

Intrigued, Kroc marvels at their mechanized fast-food operation, learning how they transformed their kitchen into a speedy “symphony of efficiency” and persuading them to allow him to franchise their carefully managed concept.

As Kroc’s enterprise grows, he becomes increasingly alienated from his long-suffering wife (Laura Dern) and develops a relationship with the wife (Linda Cardellini) of one of his business associates (Patrick Wilson).

Purple Plow Raises Awareness of Pancreatic Cancer Image
Westporter Tony Palmer (l), owner of Anthony’s Nursery & Garden Center, 492 Main St., today dedicated a newly purchased purple snowplow to raise awareness of cancer research. The plow was dedicated in memory of his cousin, Carlo Palmieri (see WestportNow Nov. 13, 2016) and the late Lt. Tim Murphy of the Norwalk Police Department, who died Jan. 29, 2016. Both succumbed to pancreatic cancer. The dedication was held on the grounds of Stop & Shop, 1790 Post Road East, where the equipment, used to plow the lot, will remain on view as a way to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer. Palmer encouraged the public to contribute to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for

In Darien, Residents Hope Trump Will Bring Economic Growth

Editor’s note: This is part of a series of visits to Connecticut towns leading up to the inauguration.

By Kyle Constable

DARIEN — The markets are up, and that is a comfort here in the ninth-wealthiest community in the U.S., one of the usually reliable Republican towns in lower Fairfield County that chose Hillary Clinton over Donald J. Trump. Image
Downtown Darien is relatively quiet during normal working hours, as many residents commute to New York or one of its satellite cities. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Kyle Constable for

Some, even a few who didn’t vote for Trump, say they already are seeing a positive effect of his election on the nation’s economy. Ben Brightwell, a Darien lawyer, is one of the those people. While waiting in line at a Dunkin’ Donuts in town last week, he said he finds himself equal parts hopeful and fearful of a Trump presidency.

“Obviously, the market’s done well,” he said. “I’m hoping that we kind of stay on the upswing, but I’m scared, too.”

Brightwell is one of many Darien residents who have cast ballots for Republican candidates in past elections but could not vote for Trump last year. He wrote in Evan McMullin, an independent presidential candidate from Utah who ran as a conservative alternative to Trump.

WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 268 Hillspoint Road Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 268 Hillspoint Road is in process. Built in 1964, the one-story contemporary has 2,514-square feet, is situated on a .49-acre waterfront property in the Compo Beach section, and changed ownership in July 2016 for $5 million. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for

Installing ‘Smart’ Traffic Lights Image
Workers today install “smart” traffic lights at the intersection of Main Street and Avery Place. They will soon replace the current traffic lights, which will remain active until the electronic installation is completed and the power supply is connected. A similar traffic light replacement will be done at the intersection of Main Street and Myrtle Avenue, one block away. The traffic lights at these two intersections are the only town-owned traffic lights. (See WestportNow, Jan. 4, 2017) (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for
