Saying Thank You as ‘We Pass by Their Gravestones’

By James Lomuscio

It may have rained today on what had hoped to be Westport’s annual Memorial Day Parade, but the spirit of the day, the reason for the holiday, was alive and well in the Town Hall auditorium.

There, those who had served from World War II forward were cheered by a standing-room-only crowd that had come to honor those who didn’t come back, making the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

Led by Grand Marshal Joe Schachter, a 90-year-old World War II Navy ensign who served in the Pacific, the event featured military marching band music by the Staples High School band and heartfelt speeches by First Selectman Jim Marpe, William Vornkahl, president of the Westport Veterans Council, and Schachter.

And all the while, the Honor Guard, four men representing each branch of the service, stood at solemn attention.

Heat Too Much for Band Member

WestportNow.com Image
The audience at today’s indoor Memorial Day ceremony at Westport Town Hall, including First Selectman Jim Marpe (r), applaud a Staples High School band member who fell off the stage while Marpe was speaking, apparently overcome by the heat inside the crammed meeting place. The youngster gave a wave to the crowd as he was taken to an ambulance by Westport EMS personnel and police. Marpe said the quick attention from Westport first responders in the room exemplified the excellent services they provide town residents. He noted that many first responders have served or are serving in the military. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Watching Eggs at Compo

One of two Oystercatchers watches over some eggs near the wall of the South Beach at Compo Beach on Saturday. They were taking turns sitting on some eggs. Some Westporters, knowing the birds are an endangered species, worried that the eggs were in danger from humans, as well as some gulls. By today, the area was marked off by cones and yellow tape.
