Dogs Return to Compo Beach Sunday

Dogs are back at Westport’s Compo Beach beginning Sunday.

They will be allowed on the beach through March 31 subject to restrictions, Parks & Recreation Director Jennifer Fava said today.

She said dogs are prohibited from the beach’s pavilion, playground and boardwalk.

Dogs also must be leashed in all areas except in the designated off-leash area south of the pavilion, including South Beach, Fava said.  Off-leash regulations are posted at the entrance to the off-leash area, she added.

Staples Boys Soccer Stops Greenwich Image
Vaughan Sealey’s rocket shot in the 19th minute lifted the Staples boys soccer team to a 1-0 victory today at a packed Loeffler Field. The junior’s goal was the difference in a gutsy match. Goalkeeper Ry Cohen made several key saves; defenders Chris Martenson and Ryan Fincher anchored the defense, while Matt Engler, Will Birch, Patricio Perez Elorza, Anton Mahr and Timmy Liles helped control midfield and jump-start attacks. (Birch and Liles are shown in the photo, double-teaming Greenwich.) The Wreckers —now 3-2-2 – host undefeated Norwalk on Wednesday, at 4 p.m.  Alan Frost for

Restaurant Week — Actually Two Weeks — Begins Sunday

Westport’s annual Restaurant Week — actually two weeks running from Sunday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 15 — will feature 26 eateries from Saugatuck to Southport, according to the Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce (WWCC).

Each restaurant will offer prix fixe meals to accommodate myriad palates and pocketbooks, according to Matthew Mandell, WWCC executive director.

Mandell said the event is part of a WWCC ‘Eat Local’ campaign to promote area restaurants, which began two weeks ago with the Slice of Saugatuck.

“Our restaurants have embraced this event whole heatedly making it very robust; people will need the two weeks,” Mandell said.

A Dog Sit-In Sunday for Hurricane Relief

Dogs have historically helped out in times of disaster, from search and rescue to carrying supplies.

On Sunday, there is a lot less dramatic job for them but important to hurricane relief efforts, to hear the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) tell it.

All the dogs have to do is sit on command at Compo Beach. And the longer they sit, the better.

“Bring your dog to show off a good sit and earn dollars to help out the Connecticut Humane Society hurricane relief efforts for dogs from Houston,” said Nell Barrett, spokeswoman for Southport Veterinary Center (SVC).

High-Speed Rail Information Meeting Set for Monday

Plans to expand and construct high-speed rail infrastructure throughout Fairfield County—and its effect on Westport, particularly the Green’s Farms station—will be the thrust of an information session set for Monday, Oct. 2.

The event is scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Town Hall, town officials announced today.

The meeting is being sponsored by the town in cooperation with the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation (CTHP) and the Westport Historical Society.

Gregory Stroud, special projects director for the CTHP, will focus on the possible impact to Westport and changes to the Green’s Farms train station, according to First Selectman Jim Marpe.

Marpe on Vandalized Banner: ‘Angry it’s Gone Again’

UPDATE When Westport’s Unitarian Church rededicated its new Black Lives Matter banner last week, replacing the one ripped down in August, the Rev. John Morehouse thanked his congregants and the Westport community for their support. Image

“The outpouring of support for this has been absolutely incredible,” said Morehouse, adding that the church received so many donations for a new banner, he had “enough for another if this one comes down.”

Today, those words seem prophetic. The new banner went missing sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, officials said.

Unlike the original roadside one that had been ripped down Aug. 23 and later found torn in half and on the side of the road, the new one has yet to be found, according to First Selectman Jim Marpe.

Black Lives Matter Banner Vandalized Again Image
Five days after its rededication (see WestportNow Sept. 17, 2017) , the Black Lives Matter banner at Westport’s Unitarian Church has been vandalized again, according to the Rev. John Morehouse. In a Facebook posting, he said the banner was vandalized sometime Friday night/Saturday morning. “Every time the banner is vandalized it fortifies our resolve to replace it and underscores the very need for its existence,” he said. The first banner was ripped from its frame on Aug. 23. (See WestportNow Aug. 25, 2017) (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for
