8-30g Developer: ‘Town Offered to Buy Property’

By James Lomuscio

The developer whose proposed 48-unit, 30 percent affordable housing project was denied by the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) last week says he is proceeding with a lawsuit against the town because it has a pattern of denying affordable housing.

Richard K. Freedman, president of Stamford-based Garden Homes Management, to support his claim, said the town tried to buy him out four months ago, three months before the matter came before the P&Z.

“I’ve read a lot of the online comments, and they call me an extortionist and that I’m trying to strong arm the town,” Freedman told WestportNow. “I’m not out to make a profit (on relocating this site). I don’t want to lose money. I want to come out even.

“There is no other location where I can make the numbers work,” he said. “The town was clearly looking to spend a considerable amount of money to buy me out.”

Shifting Ground for Artificial Turf in CT

By Jan Ellen Spiegel

www.ctmirror.org

Susan Lewis’s soccer-adoring son Justin was already through his chemo and radiation treatments for lymphoma and thinking about getting back to his team at Fairfield University when she caught a television report one morning.

“There was a story about a soccer player,” she said. “I stopped to watch it, and my mouth dropped open.”

The report was about cancer cases among athletes playing on artificial turf made from ground-up used tires – crumb rubber is what it’s called. Some soccer players in particular had been diagnosed, mostly with lymphoma as well as leukemia. The question posed was whether the crumb rubber was the cause.

“Obviously, as parents of this young man, we wanted to understand why or how this could possibly happen,” she said. The first focus had to be on getting Justin better. “But when that came up, I certainly thought, ‘Wow, could that be the answer?’”

An ‘Imperfect’ Malloy Asks for Patience, Understanding

By Mark Pazniokas

www.ctmirror.org

Stamford – In the first of a series of open-ended town hall meetings, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy today stood his ground on his intention to make deep spending cuts.

But the governor did so in a tone more plaintive than combative, suggesting in his sixth year in office he was humbled by fiscal challenges.

“I’m an imperfect governor. I’m an imperfect messenger. I’m imperfect in many different ways,” Malloy said after an evening of complaints about things he is cutting. “But I’m working really hard to find the right balance. I don’t believe the right balance is raising taxes at this time.”

The audience sent him home with applause, an uncertain prospect at the start of an evening that would produce nearly unbroken complaints about what his budget would cost Connecticut in terms of services and quality of life.

Westporter No. 1 in Fenway Snowboard Event

WestportNow.com Image
UPDATE Julia Marino, 18, of Westport tonight took home first place in the women’s Big Air At Fenway snowboard finals in Boston’s Fenway Park. The home of the Red Sox was transformed into a snowboard winter wonderland with a 140-foot tall, 430-foot long man-made snow-covered ramp and landing zone covering the area from center field to home plate. More than 75 athletes from 25 countries competed in men’s and women’s snowboarding and freeskiing, part of an attempt to bring the sport down from the mountain and into cities where more people can enjoy it. It gave U.S. fans a chance to get more familiar with big air before it enters the Winter Olympics in 2018 in South Korea.  Moreno is a 2018 Olympic hopeful. Contributed photo

‘I Was So Stoked’

WestportNow.com Image
Westporter Julia Moreno, 18, is all smiles after completing a first place award-winning run tonight at the women’s Big Air At Fenway snowboard finals in Boston’s Fenway Park “I was so stoked,’’ Marino told the Boston Globe. “I was so happy actually to be able to put down my runs and win. This is an amazing place to have a snowboarding contest. It’s definitely the coolest, most creative place to have a contest because it’s so unique. There’s never been anything like this. It’s just a big jump in the middle of a baseball stadium and that’s pretty cool to say.’’ Marino is a 2018 Olympic hopeful when the Big Air event debuts at the Winter Olympics in South Korea, Julia’s mom, Elaine, said she heads Friday night to Quebec to compete in the Quebec City Big Air. She departs Sunday morning with the U.S. snowboarding team, to compete in a FIS World Cup slope style contest in Pyeong Chang, South Korea, the course that the Olympians will ride in 2018. The building, former home of Terex Corp., changed ownership in March 2012 for $9 million. Timon Malloy, president of Stamford-based Fred F. French Investing LLC , the new owner, said innovation of the 37,000-square foot building is being completed in two phases with final completion projected for 2017.

The former Westport resident said the initial phase, the 15,000-square foot third floor, is well underway. Then the second phase will begin—renovation of the entrance level and second floor.

“The building will be totally green, a shift from the original structure, which lacked proper insulation and was mainly electric powered,” said Malloy, son of the late Westport artist Susan Malloy.

Malloy Activating Severe Cold Weather Protocol

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy today urged Connecticut residents to prepare for bitter cold temperatures over the next several days.

He said forecasts for this weekend project a low of -5 to -10 degrees F, with sustained winds of 15 MPH, with gusts to 30-35 MPH.  This could create a wind chill of -25 to -35 at times.

In anticipation, the governor said he is activating the state’s Severe Cold Weather Protocol beginning at 4 p.m. today and it will remain in effect through 10 a.m. on Monday.

While activated, the protocol directs the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP), the Department of Social Services (DSS), the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), and the Department of Housing (DOH) to coordinate with 2-1-1 and Connecticut’s network of shelters to ensure that the state’s most vulnerable populations are protected from the severe cold weather.
