Comings & Goings: Oscar’s Deli to Close

WestportNow.com Image

Oscar’s Deli, a Westport Main Street mainstay for 42 years, will close Monday, according to an announcement tonight on its Facebook page.

It said on Sunday morning customers will share memories and stories about the deli and its owner, Lee Papageorge, who is battling lung cancer.

The closing follows by two years the closing of another Main Street mom and pop eatery, Westport Pizzeria, after 45 years. But it moved to a new location on Post Road East.

Rumors of Oscar’s closing had circulated for months when word spread of the illness of its owner.

Staring Down 8-30g, P&Z Favors 4-Story Housing

By James Lomuscio

It looks like a four-story, 94-unit rental property on the Post Road East near the Sherwood Island Connector could be in Westport’s future -– even though the developer has offered an alternative three-story building.

That was the consensus of a 4 to 2 straw vote taken by Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) in a work session tonight.

The reason: the original 8-30g proposal put forth by 1177 PRE Associates LLC would give the town more affordable housing units, 30 percent, and an eight-year moratorium on how to handle the state’s affordable housing statute, 8-30g.

The developer’s second plan, put forth July 7 at the request of the P&Z, (see WestportNow July 7, 2016) would reduce the number of affordable units to 26.6 percent. That small reduction, however, would cut the number of moratorium points from 60 to 36.

Westport Cited in Indictment of Man Who Threatened Jews

A Stamford man with a large stash of weapons in his home has been indicted on charges of threatening online to kill Jews, including one he said he would meet at Carvel’s in Westport.

Kendall Sullivan, 50, of Stamford, who allegedly threatened to “slaughter” Jews and “burn their Synagogue to the ground,” was charged Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Bridgeport, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced today.

Sullivan made multiple threats on the Metalthrone forum—an internet forum for heavy metal music fans—between May and July, prosecutors said.

On June 10, according to an indictment cited in a news release, Sullivan threatened to meet another forum user at the Carvel ice cream store in Westport, where “I will shoot or run over you … it is not just YOU, but your fellow Satanists I want to track down and kill … You are a [expletive] JEW!…”
