Showing the Flag

WestportNow.com Image
Among the many Westport residents honoring veterans on the Memorial Day weekend by proudly draping flags on their homes are Veronica and Thomas Hofstetter, 15 Bridge St. Veronica Hofstetter said her family has a long and proud military history. She said her husband, Thomas C. Hofstetter III, served in the U.S. Army in the 1990s, attaining the rank of captain, his father served in the Korean War, his grandfather fought in the Battle of Verdun in World War I, and his great-great-grandfather was in the Civil War. She said Tom, who was invited to address Saugatuck Elementary School students on Friday, told them: When you see a military person in uniform say ‘hello and thank for your your service to our country.’“  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Book Choreographs Local Story Behind New Yorker Covers

By James Lomuscio

The book’s cover tells it all, striking a chord with everyone familiar with Westport.

It’s an artist’s rendering of Compo Beach, glistening sand, grass culms, azure skies spotted with white cotton clouds and beachgoers either on the sand and gathered under a pavilion of sorts, white sails in the distance.

The title of the coffee table sized book, “The New Yorker in Westport,” by Eve Potts and Andrew Bentley also drives home a timeless sense of place, albeit in the same font of the time honored magazine.

Recently, Potts and Bentley sat down at the Westport Historical Society (WHS), home to the book’s genesis. A year ago in April the WHS hosted an exhibit showcasing many of the 767 covers produced by 17 New Yorker artists living in and around Westport from 1925 to 1989.

WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 2 Newtown Turnpike

WestportNow.com Image
UPDATE and CORRECT An application for a permit to demolish a structure at Westport’s 2 Newtown Turnpike is in process. Built in 1939, the one-story bungalow has 1,240-square feet and is situated on a 4.48-acre property. The demolition permit application excludes the 4,962-square feet main house and the 767-square feet stand-alone apartment. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (Editor’s note: this picture replaces the earlier published picture of the main house.) (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Barbara Butler: this year requests have increased. Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

“Last year, thanks to the generosity of the Westport community and the schools’ PTAs, 36 Westport students were able to purchase new special event clothing for their graduations from middle and high school,” Butler said about the program now in its 12th year.  “This year, the number of requests is considerably higher.”

While not stating how many more requests there were this year, Butler urged the public to help via tax-deductible donation.

“If donors prefer, gift cards of any amount are most welcome as well,” Butler said, adding she has received numerous heartfelt notes and photographs of the proud youngsters walking across the stage or with their relatives on graduation day.
