Morning Exercise on the Saugatuck

WestportNow.com Image
For the first of two consecutive Sundays, Fairfield resident and yoga instructor Jeanne Stevens today mentors a group in the art of vinyasa movements at Saugatuck Plaza, overlooking the Saugatuck River. Vinyasa yoga (vinyasa meaning “breath-synchronized movement”) is a series of poses in which movement is synchronized to the breath. This style is sometimes also called flow yoga because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Volunteer Performers

WestportNow.com Image
When River City Slim and the Zydeco Hogs asked for volunteers tonight to join their performance at the Westport Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts, two cousins answered the call. Eliana Rosner, 8, of New York shared the washboard duties with her cousin Jake Rosner, 10, of Stamford. Both are visiting relatives in Westport. Eliana has had voice lessons and Jake has studied piano, according to their parents. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

Few 4th of July Visitors to Compo Beach

WestportNow.com Image
Overcast skies and temperatures in the 60s at mid-day today resulted in a meager 4th of July crowd at Westport’s Compo Beach. (The sun came out later in the day.) This was in contrast to the thousands who descended on the beach Friday when sun was bright and at night when the annual fireworks festivities drew a sellout crowd.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 223 Hillspoint Road

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house and cottage at Westport’s 223 Hillspoint Road, opposite Elvira’s in the Old Mill section, is in process. The house, built in 1910, is a 2-1/4 story colonial and has 2,606-square feet.  Built in 1920, the one-story cottage has 504 square feet. The structures are situated on a .24-acre waterfront property that changed ownership in September 2014 for $2.9 million. Because the house and cottage were built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. View is of the rear of the house which faces the water. Fireworks: ‘The Largest Party in Westport’

By James Lomuscio

From rosettes to streamers to colorful explosions that included smiley faces and little green men, Westport’s annual fireworks display at Compo Beach tonight did not disappoint the estimated 10,000 persons who seemed to fill every square foot of sand.

The Fireworks by Grucci show launched from a barge a half-mile off shore was sponsored by Westport’s Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Parks and Recreation Department and underwritten by Melissa & Doug, the Wilton-based educational toy company owned by Westporters Melissa and Doug Bernstein.

And with Fairfield and Norwalk having shorefront fireworks the same night, some said they were hoping for a fireworks viewing trifecta.

“That would be great,” said Morgan Brodie, a Westport volunteer firefighter stationed with other first responders near the lifeguard building.

Compo Fireworks Draws Thousands

WestportNow.com Image
A crowd estimated by police at 10,000 watched the annual Independence Day fireworks tonight at Westport’s Compo Beach. The weather was clear and in the upper 60s as pyrotechnics—for the first time—lit the skies during the singing of the national anthem at the line “and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,”  and continued moments later for about 20 minutes. Entertaining the Fireworks Crowds

WestportNow.com Image
The Marching Cobras of New York and Sapphire Dancers entertained the Compo Beach crowds tonight before the annual Independence Day fireworks display. The White Plains, N.Y. based nonprofit was founded in 2009 to help at-risk kids from across New York City’s boroughs and Westchester beat bad influences by embracing music. They performed at Super Bowl 48 and appeared in the 2014 four-time Oscar-winning film “The Birdman.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

An Early Fireworks Arrival Every Year

WestportNow.com Image
Westporter Rob Arnold was at Compo Beach at about 6 a.m. today to secure his picnic spot near the cannons— a ritual he says he and his wife Sherlyn Celone-Arnold have done every Compo fireworks day of their 11-year marriage. “We expect over 35 friends and family members to join us later in the day,” he said. “Sherlyn buys about 15 fireworks parking tickets and hands them out. The number of tickets she buys seems to get progressively larger each year.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE)
