Family Art Day Crowd at Arts Center

WestportNow.com Image
Families got creative together today at the Westport Arts Center’s bi-annual Family Art Day, designing family crests, personalized planters, and other hands-on projects. The Family Art Day: Create Your Family’s Modern Crest projects introduced artistic processes and techniques, helped youngsters explore their imaginations, and provided context for the Arts Center’s current exhibition. The backdrop for the event was the Arts Center’s “As We Are!” exhibition, on view through April 1. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Xenia Gross for WestportNow.com

Democracy March Draws Hundreds, U.S. Legislators

By James Lomuscio

From Jesup Green to Veterans Green, today’s March to DefenDemocracy drew hundreds brandishing myriad anti-President Trump placards, a show of force from Democrats.

Unabashed, they appeared energized by Friday’s Trumpcare defeat, and they were cheered on at Veterans Green by U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, and state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg, all Democrats, as well as by Republican First Selectman Jim Marpe.

DefenDemocracy was co-founded by Westporters Darcy Hicks, Lauen Soloff, Lisa Bowman and Nita Prasad, and the event drew support from Westport’s Democratic Town Committee (DTC).

“We founded this right after the march,” Hicks said referring to women’s Washington, D.C. march protesting the election and inauguration of President Donald J. Trump. “The reason for today is to unite the community and all the grassroots groups that have formed since the election to defend our democracy.

Letter: BOF Members Say Tell State Westport Is Not Its Piggy Bank

(Editor’s note: The following letter is from six Board of Finance members. Member John Hartwell decided not to participate)

Dear Westport Resident:

Westport has worked hard to prudently manage its finances and tax base. All branches of our town government, many elected officials and volunteers, have worked collaboratively, on behalf of all residents, to ensure we have a high quality of life at a cost all residents and businesses can afford. Sadly, maintaining this balance will be more difficult in the future.

Today we are faced with grim economic news from the State of Connecticut. This is not a one-off problem and it will continue for years to come. Because of our state government’s inability to manage its budget and to control spending resulting in a projected deficit of over $1.5 billion next year alone, Westport finds itself in a difficult position.

Instead of tackling a state government that has grown too large and too expensive for the residents of Connecticut, the state is largely trying to solve its budget problems by shifting costs to towns.

First, the state is decreasing or totally eliminating payments it has made to Westport for either education or other services which equals $3 million-$4 million in 2018 alone. We assume this revenue from the state, which directly supplemented our operating budgets, is permanently gone.

Westport Students Perform in Boston

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Staples High School and Bedford Middle School Chamber Music students performed at Symphony Hall in Boston on Friday. They also had a master class with the Boston Symphony Orchestra members. It was the same day that Superintendent Colleen Palmer’s latest budget message mentioned the possible elimination of individual music lessons in grades 4 to 8. The subject will be discussed at Monday’s Board of Education meeting. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photo

New Downtown Restaurant Busy in Pre-Opening

WestportNow.com Image
Amis Trattoria, the Roman eatery from Philadelphia-based Vetri Family of Restaurants, was busy with customers tonight in the new Bedford Square development in Westport’s downtown. It doesn’t officially open until Friday, March 31, but the soft opening drew Saturday night crowds. Owned by Urban Outfitters, which also owns the adjoining Anthropologie, it features seasonally-driven small plates, handcrafted pastas, local seafood and antipasti selections from Executive Chef Brad Spence.
