Man Dies in Construction Accident

A man died in a construction accident today off of Compo Road North, police said.

Details of the accident and identity of the victim were not immediately released.

Police said the accident occurred at about 12:21 p.m. The man was transported to Norwalk Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Lt. Eric Woods.

The accident is under investigation by the Westport Police Detective Bureau with assistance of Fairfield, Trumbull, and state police departments as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Making Progress on Commuter Lot

Work continued today on the renovation and repair of commuter parking lot No. 1 at the Metro-North Westport station in Saugatuck. According to Police Chief Foti Koskinas, “There can’t be a more state-of-the-art railroad station parking lot than this one will be when completed.”  He cited improvements that include new drainage, an underground electrical system, surveillance cameras, seven electric car charging stations, and four blue light security stations. North Avenue Bridge Finally Reopens

Florida Fugitive Arrested Outside CVS

Westport officers early today arrested a man wanted for armed robbery in Florida outside the Westport CVS.

The capture came after CVS employees became suspicious and called police when one of his friends tried to buy multiple gift cards using a declined credit card.

“The suspects attempted to leave the store prior to police arrival; however, a vehicle description was provided by employees,” said Lt. Anthony Prezioso.

He said responding officers pulled over the vehicle as it attempted to leave the CVS parking lot at 397 Post Road East.

Suspect Nabbed After Run Through Backyards

After a run through backyards and a failed hiding attempt, Westport officers arrested a Danbury man for trying to cash fraudulent checks, police said today.

The suspect, Cody Tyson, 24, tried to cash three fraudulent checks totaling $2,670 at the Bank of America drive-up at 126 Post Road East on Friday around 4 p.m., said Lt. Eric Woods.

“When confronted by officers, he fled in his vehicle and was not pursued based on his reckless operation and time of day,” Woods said. “The vehicle was later located, abandoned, in the area of 323 Main Street.”

A Wesport EMS vehicle spotted the suspect vehicle turn on to Compo Road North and alerted police.

DUI Arrest Follows Crash into Stone Wall

Officers arrested a Norwalk man Sunday night for driving while under the influence and failure to drive in the right lane after he crashed his vehicle into a stone wall on Kings Highway North, police said today.

According to Lt. Eric Woods, officers responded around 10 p.m. to the area of 104 Kings Highway North “on a report of a motor vehicle crash into a stone wall.”

The driver John Goodchild, 44, was not injured but was intoxicated at the time of the crash, Woods said.

Released after posting a $500 bond, Goodchild is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Art Show to Tackle Bullying

A fall art exhibit that examines bullying in a broad cultural context is set to run from Sept. 9 through Oct. 29 at the Westport Arts Center (WAC).

Titled “More than Words” the exhibit will explore how perceived imbalances of social, physical or political power can be abused to marginalize others, according to WAC officials.

The exhibit will launch with a reception open to the public on Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The show includes artistic expressions of gender, racial, religious, geopolitical and age inequality, as well as works that serve to demonstrate the impact of bullying and cyberbullying, according to an announcement.

Portion of Compo Road North Closed

As announced last week, the portion of Compo Road North between Cross Highway and Main Street was closed today for replacement of the culvert beneath the roadway. The work is part of the ongoing project to realign the problematic intersection of Main Street and Compo Road North at Clinton Avenue. The closure ws announced for 30 days. Comings & Goings: Donut Crazy to Train Station

Donut Crazy will open at the eastbound side of Metro-North’s Westport station in Saugatuck around Oct. 1, according to Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas, pending approval of the Board of Selectman on Thursday. The store replaces Steam, which opened in January 2014 and closed in March this year. Donut Crazy, founded by Jason Wojnarowski, currently operates shops in Shelton, Stratford, and Bridgeport and plans to open in New Haven this fall, according to Koskinas.
