Granger at the Movies: ‘The Big Sick,’ ‘Despicable Me 3,’ ‘The House’

By Susan Granger

Special to WestportNow

With comic book adaptations and animation crowding the multiplexes, “The Big Sick,” a surprisingly witty, sweet-natured romantic comedy is a welcome change.

WestportNow.com Image

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon, it relates how a struggling Pakistani/American comedian (Nanjiani) in Chicago connects with flirtatious grad student Emily (Zoe Kazan), as what they both thought was a one-night stand develops into a real relationship.

Kumail’s devoutly Muslim family expects him to enter into a traditional, arranged marriage with an eligible Pakistani woman. So he avoids telling them about his growing affection for Emily because he knows his parents would disown him if he married a Caucasian.

It’s the classic dilemma of a trying-to-assimilate, second-generation immigrant caught between two worlds, and Kumail’s cross-cultural deception leads to their eventual breakup.

Marpe: Reminder Residents Can ‘Opt Out’ of Yellow Pages

The books have been around for generations, seared into the American psyche with the jingle, “Let your fingers do the walking through the Yellow Pages.”

WestportNow.com Image

But the internet, as it has with most print media, has put the kibosh on the directories that had once been revered like encyclopedias and used more often.

And now, many see them as bothersome bulky mail, so much so that in May two members of the Westport’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) proposed an Unsolicited Bulky Mail Ordinance. The legislative body is expected to hear it at its next meeting.

And today, First Selectman Jim Marpe’s office reminded residents they have the choice about which directories they would like to receive or stop receiving in the future.

Backpacks, Gift Cards Needed for Back to School Program

The Westport Human Services Department’s annual Back to School Program is currently seeking donations of new backpacks, gift cards and cash donations.

Human Services Director Elaine Daignault said gift cards for Staples Office Supply, Walmart and Target are being sought to benefit income-eligible Westport families.

“As local, state and federal budgets face challenging economic times, and families feel the burden of financial hardships, there is a growing need for assistance right here in Westport,” Daignault said.

She said that since 2001, the number of beneficiaries has grown from 23 families with 48 children, to 118 families with 189 children who qualified and received new school supplies in 2016, a 400 percent increase.

Town Plan Draft Now Online, Public Input Sought

Westport officials say the final draft of the 2017 town Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD) is available for public inspection.

It is available on the town website, and a hard copy is available for review in the Planning and Zoning Department at Town Hall.

For the past year, the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) has worked on updating the 2007 POCD and has incorporated comments and feedback from surveys and public meetings, the announcement said, adding that more input from residents and property owners is welcome.

The POCD is an advisory document used by the P&Z and other town agencies to protect resources important to residents, to guide growth and change and to identify facilities and services needed or wanted to support the community.

Kelly’s Tenure: ‘Professionalism, Humor and Calming Influence’

By James Lomuscio

After 15 years, three administrations, myriad Westport issues and townwide changes, Assistant Town Attorney Gail Kelly, who leaves Friday, had this advice for her successor.

“Enjoy it, have a good sense of humor and just enjoy the people you are working with,” said Kelly, who has held the post since 2002.

“And take advantage of the knowledge of the people at Town Hall. You can’t do this alone.”

Kelly, a grandmother who moved to Westport 33 years ago with her husband Bruce and two boys Jesse and Cameron, will be replaced Aug. 14 by Eileen Lavigne Flug, the former moderator of the Representative Town Meeting (RTM).

Trader Joe’s Protest

WestportNow.com Image
The Westport Trader Joe’s tonight was one of several locations targeted by protesters organized by the Culinary Workers Union Local 226. They were protesting the sale (not in Westport) of several beer brands whose owners are Donald Trump supporters and who “helped propel into power political leaders who attack immigrants, women, the environment, LGBTQIA+ communities, and working families.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Jaime Bairaktaris for WestportNow.com
