Daniel C. Esty, one of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s highest-profile appointments as the commissioner of Energy and Environmental Protection, is leaving the administration to return to the faculty of Yale University.
Esty’s departure was expected as his extended Yale sabbatical was expiring this summer and his position as a state regulator was a complication for the ability of his wife, U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, D-5th District, to raise money for her re-election without potential conflicts.
No successor was announced. Esty’s resignation takes effect Feb. 3.
Esty is a noted author and industry consultant who took an initial two-year leave of absence from Yale University in 2011 to introduce market-driven energy policies pushed by Malloy, often to the discomfort of environmentalists. Under Esty, the purview of the Department of Environmental Protection was greatly expanded to include energy policy.
