Y Gets Zoning Permit, Expands Aquatic Center
With its long sought zoning permit finally in hand, the Westport Weston Family Y is planning on a groundbreaking for its new Mahackeno home early in the new year, according to CEO Rob Reeves.

In a Christmas Eve e-mail to supporters, Reeves said the zoning permit was issued by the town’s Planning & Zoning Department on Friday.
He also said the Family Y board and trustees have voted to proceed with an enlarged Aquatic Center to enjoy the benefits of a 10-lane competitive pool and expanded warm-water family/teaching/therapeutic pool.
Reeves said the new aquatics facility will be named The Strittmatter Family Aquatic Center, in honor of Board President Bonnie Strittmatter, her husband Bill, and their children, Laura and Alex.
“Bonnie’s tireless efforts and her family’s philanthropic leadership are an inspiration to us all as we continue to build what truly matters—a modern new Y facility that will serve our members and the entire community for generations to come,” Reeves said.
He said while the “Just Add Water Soon” fundraising effort has raised more than $340,000 toward the cost of funding this expansion since September, the added expense increases the Family Y’s current funding gap to $4 million.
The total cost of the new Y stands at $38.5 million, Reeves said.
He said the Y will soon announce the date of its groundbreaking but first must secure the financing package for the project.
“With several very favorable meetings with prospective lenders already undertaken, we are confident that we will receive a letter of commitment by mid-January,” Reeves said.
