WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 163 Compo Rd. S.
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 163 Compo Road South is in process. Built in 1912, the two-story colonial has 1,545 square feet and is situated on a 1.55-acre property. Too bad, this one seems to have additions and alterations possibilities. Sorry to see it go in the dumpster!
I hope that additions are considered rather than razing this well proportioned 100 year old house. It certainly is important to the street scape and the character of Westport’s residential inventory.
It’s sad that see that the first call to action by “developers” is to tear down our heritage.
Since this house is perfectly sound, albeit “small and old fashioned,” and since it sits on a full acre in 1/2-acre zoning, I would just slide it to one side and build a second similar house on the other lot. Maybe even—crazy idea—make them “affordable.”
Perhaps this can be discussed at the HDC meeting instead of just the same old all-in-favor which expedites the six-month demolition waiting period.
In fact, if members of the HDC voted against all the teardowns and forced developers to wait a full six months, maybe they wouldn’t be so quick to demolish all these houses.
Just my $.02/cents.
Is there a way to have Compo Road South designated as an Historic District? There are still a number of homes, including this one, that help retain the New England character and charm of our town.
That’s up to the residents, or, a significant percentage of them, as John McCarthy & others have frequently reminded us in the past.
