UPDATE George Underhill, Westport’s former tax collector and a two-term Representative Town Meeting (RTM) member, announced today he will resign from the legislative body effective Feb. 1.

He and his wife Carol plan to move next month into a newly constructed Cape in Guilford.

“I’m hoping to move next week,” said Underhill, 75, noting that a developer has gone to contract on his Westport home.

“We’re staying within the State of Connecticut, but moving up the line, downsizing if you will,” said Underhill, a Westport resident since 1975.

Underhill, an accountant, moved to town with his family from Massachusetts after transferring from the Bank of Boston to Chase, he said.

In Westport he volunteered as treasurer of the Republican Town Committee, a job he held for 12 years, one that in 1993 caught the eye of former Republican First Selectman Douglas Wood who offered Underhill the post of tax collector.

“I retired in 2009, and I went through four administrations,” said Underhill, who also served as tax collector under First Selectman Joseph Arcudi, First Selectwoman Diane Farrell and current First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, now in his second term.

After retiring as tax collector, Underhill was elected to represent District 4 on the RTM. He has served on its employee compensation, public protection and rules committees.

“What happens now is that we publicize the fact there is an opening, people from his district can come forward, and they will get interviewed by the three (RTM) members from his district who will pick a replacement,” said Hadley Rose, RTM moderator.

While he looks forward to “really retiring,” Underhill said he has nothing but fond memories of the town.

“Westport has been good to us,” he said, noting that his grown children all went through the town’s schools. “It’s going to be difficult to match it, but we’re going to give it a try.”
