The Staples boys soccer team knew Norwalk, their second-round opponent in the state LL tournament, would be a stern test.

The Bears were 17-1-1, seeded first in the tourney and ranked No. 7 in the nation.

The Wreckers threw everything they had at them today at Testa Field, but fell 1-0. Norwalk’s goal came with less than 17 minutes remaining.

“I’m tremendously proud of our guys,” head coach Dan Woog said. “They pushed Norwalk to the limit.” He cited Harry Birch, Andrew Puchala, Yousef Shahin, Jack Scott, Greg Shikowitz and Ethan Bradeen for their tenacity and hard play.

Up front, Jordan McNair, Joe Greenwald, Diego Alanis and Noah Bender kept Norwalk on their toes. Behind them all, goalkeeper James Hickok had another superb outing.
