Fairfield police today arrested a former swim coach at Westport’s Staples High School after he confessed to sexually assaulting two young girls for more than three years, the Connecticut Post said.

The newspaper said Jeffrey Schare, 43, of Fairfield, who taught math and coached the boys swim and dive team for seven years until he left in November, was charged with multiple sexual assault counts and risk of injury to a minor. It said he was released on $150,000 bond

Police Lt. James Perez said Schare’s arrest, which took place in his hometown of Fairfield, came after a lengthy and thorough investigation, the Post said.

Inklings, the Staples newspaper, said word of Schare’s arrest “comes almost three weeks after Schare’s unexpected leave, which puzzled both students and faculty members.”

The Post said police said both victims, who are now 12 and 8, are acquainted with Schare and attend school in Fairfield. The older girl complained to a counselor at her school, the report said.

Sick bastard!  Could this news come at a worse time? The poor parents of those girls.  I hope he is put away for a VERY long time.

Finally, a comment on this.

I cannot believe there is no greater outrage about this.

12? 8?  for 3 years?

Is it necessary to shut down all extracurricular activities in order to keep our children safe from these monsters?

There should be much stricter background checks and physiological screening for teachers and coaches.

A teacher or coach should never be allowed to be alone with a child.  Is that such an unreasonable statement?

Is it me or was there 10 times more outrage against the football coach who gave some players a porn website password. This guy is a sexual predator and it seems like it’s barely being covered. I wonder if he’s well connected.

I think the reason there were more comments about the football coach - not necessarily more outrage - was because some of the comments about the coach seemed to dismiss his actions as ‘not that big a deal’.

And as stupid and harmful as the football coach’s actions were, no one should compare him to Schare and his heinous crimes.

Some of the charges against him are 1st degree sexual assault- meaning some form of penetration took place-either oral, anal, or vaginal, however slight.

Someone asked if he is connected? Well, not directly but he may be a part of a group of people who are known to get special treatment. Why is his bail so low for such revolting crimes? Did he have to surrender his passport? Don’t be surprised when he takes off for Israel and never comes back!

The fathers of these girls should deliver their own justice.
