A Connecticut Light and Power Company official said “equipment failure” at a Westport substation was the cause of the blackout which began at about 2 p.m. Power came back on in the downtown area shortly after 3 p.m. CL&P said the outage was about 45 minutes.

The official did not identify the substation, but the one at Main Street and Canal Street is known to provide power to the affected area.

Initially the utility reported more than 500 customers were without power and later increased the number to 1,224 before power came back.

The utility said affected customers were in an area bounded by Main Street to Post Road West and to Partrick Road. Westport Town Hall was affected and automatically switched to generator power.

Many downtown businesses locked their doors and put up notices saying they were closed due a power outage.

At Oscar’s on Main Street, customers having a late lunch ate by emergency lighting and light streaming through the windows.

Police said among traffic lights out were ones at Taylor Place, Parking Harding Plaza, Kings Highway and Wilton Road, and Canal Street at Main Street.

Police erected temporary stop signs at some of the intersections.
