Milford Man Arrested in First Night Scuffle
Richard Weizel: released on $10,000 bond. Westport Police photo
A 57-year-old Milford man was arrested at a First Night Westport Town Hall event New Year’s Eve when he allegedly forced his way inside and then refused an officer’s order to leave, police said.
Richard Weizel pushed the officer, causing him to fall to the ground and began to fight with him, police said. While the officer tried to take him into custody, he kept fighting with the officer and a fire inspector who was at the event and had come over to assist the officer, police said.
The incident involving Officer Mark Pocius occurred in the basement level where actors from the Westport Community Theatre were performing, according to reports from the scene.
Pocius radioed for help saying he was in a stairwell and other officers were on the scene within moments to assist.
After a brief struggle, Weizel was taken into custody and charged with breach of peace, criminal trespass, interfering with an officer, and assault on a public safety official, police said.
He was released after posting a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Jan. 10, police said.
