Harbor Watch Volunteers Spot Fuel Spill
![]()
Volunteers from Westport’s Harbor Watch at Earthplace on Tuesday spotted an oil spill on Dead Man’s Brook at Jesup Road and Imperial Avenue. Team leader Josh Cooper and his Staples High School students were performing a routine water quality monitoring collection sequence when they noticed sheen on the surface of the water and a strong odor of either fuel or oil, according to Earthplace. They summoned Dick Harris (l), Harbor Watch director, who in turned notified authorities. Responding firefighters placed booms on the water to try to contain the spill and summoned the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which took over the investigation. It was not known if the source of the contamination was located. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photo
