Donald L. Hendrickson, 85
Donald Lamont Hendrickson of Topsham, Maine, a former Westport resident for 40 years, died Dec. 20 in a hospice house in Auburn, Maine following long illnesses. He was 85.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1927 in Ponca City, Okla., the son of E.G. and Louise Hendrickson, now deceased, of Lake Charles, La.
He grew up primarily in Haddonfield, N J. but completed high school and college in Lincoln, Neb. where his grandparents lived.
He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in chemical engineering in 1948 and received a Master of Science degree from MIT in 1950.
He served in the Air Force, stationed at Halloman Air Force Base in New Mexico while working on the Matador cruise missile. He lived with his family in Westport from 1965 until 2006.
Following a career as a chemical engineer with Mobil Oil/Exxon Mobil, he enjoyed an early retirement in 1987.
While living in Westport, he was a member of the Y’s Men of Westport Weston, played golf and bowled regularly.
In 2006, he and his wife, Patricia, a former Staples High School science teacher for 20 years, moved to a retirement community in Topsham, Maine.
There he was an active member of a bowling league, participating twice a week. He was an avid fan of the University of Nebraska football team and the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years and their three children, Andrew Hendrickson of Mendocino, Calif., Laura Hendrickson and her husband, Rupert Stasch, of La Jolla, Calif., and Julia Hendrickson of Silver Lake, N.H.
He was pre-deceased by his sister, Carol Hendrickson Lyle of Atlanta, Ga.
A private burial will be held at the family plot in Cataumet Cemetery in Sandwich, Mass.
