Homeowners on Westport’s Crooked Mile Road Thursday night doused a dishwasher fire with a fire extinguisher after being alerted by smoke alarms that also summoned Westport firefighters.
“The outcome experienced at this fire would have been much different if it had not been for the early notification of the functioning smoke detectors and the premises having a monitored alarm system,” said Assistant Chief John Plofkin, Jr.
He said at 11:33 p.m., the Westport fire department dispatcher received the report of an activated residential fire alarm at a Crooked Mile Road residence.
While the initial response units were en route, an alarm company said that the occupants reported a dishwasher on fire in their kitchen. The response was upgraded to add additional units for a structure fire, Plofkin said.
First arriving firefighters found a moderate smoke condition and the fire out, he said.
“The occupants reported that they had used a portable dry chemical fire extinguisher to put the fire out before leaving the residence,” Plofkin said.
The fire was contained to the dishwasher with some minor extension to the wood flooring in the kitchen, he said.
Additional arriving companies were deployed to the upper floors and basement area to shut down the power supply to the unit and to ventilate the smoke from the structure, Plofkin said.
Family members reported that they were alerted of the fire by their smoke alarms which were still sounding when firefighters arrived on scene, he said.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshal’s Office, Plofkin said.
There were no injuries, he said.

Not advertising, but I just replaced my fire extinguishers (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs) at Westport Hardware…anyone know what you do w/ the old ones? Per this article, they’re a good thing to have on hand. You hope to never have to use them, but they’re inexpensive & simple to use.
I would think you need to discard them during the next time they have a hazard waste disposal day in town.
