Westporter Shirley Mellor has confirmed publicly what she has been telling friends for some time—she will close Max’s Art Supplies, a downtown mainstay since 1956, on Sept. 1. The store, a haven for Westport artists since art was a vibrant homegrown industry here, has fallen on hard times in the Internet age. View is of a 2006 gathering of Mellor and artists on the store’s 50th anniversary—duplicating a famed 1981 shot that featured Mellow and her late husband Max Kaplan on their 25th anniversary. What a shame. Another closing of a locally owned business in Downtown Westport. Max’s Art supply opened 3 years after my family moved to Westport in 1953 and for many years was a vital part of a true community shopping area. Down town Westport has now become almost a shopping mall and is often referred to as the Rodeo Drive of the East.
Max’s you will be missed.

Last year I took a couple of Art classes through Westport’s Continuing Education, (my first since graduating decades ago) and Nina spent the longest time with me helping me find everything I needed, and even suggesting when I might want to wait on a few things. I can’t remember when I’ve had service like that - and frankly I don’t expect to again anytime soon. It is the end of an era.
