Comings & Goings: John’s Best Closing After 45 Years
![]()
John’s Best Pizza, 361 Post Road West, will close on Jan. 20 or 21, according to Dino Avellino, owner since 1980 of the restaurant that dates to 1967. “I’ve been on a month-to-month lease for about a year but now the landlord wants to increase the rent, and I cannot afford it,” said Avellino, who turns 62 next month. “Business is slow but I could survive if it stayed at the old rent.” Avellino said John’s Best pizza restaurant was opened on July 1, 1967 by his cousin, Ralph Sandolo who, now at 84, still owns six other John’s Best Pizza restaurants in Connecticut—Norwalk, Ridgefield, Wilton and Brookfield. “This is the only John’s Best that’s closing,” he said. Avellino said John’s Best Pizza is one of the three oldest pizza places in Westport—the others are Westport Pizzeria and Angelina’s. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

I’m so sorry to hear this.
I’d like see a similar photo of the landlord… my guess is that his expenses went up on January1. For health care costs, as well as other taxes.
My fear is that this is the first of many small local businesses that will close this year due to rising costs from their vendors.
