A Westport man suspected of stealing jewelry from a local residence earlier this month turned himself in on a warrant today, police said.

Lukas Van Zanten, 23, of 38 Gorham Ave. was charged with first-degree larceny, according to Capt. Vincent Penna. The jewelry was valued at more than $26,000, Penna said.

He was released after posting a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on June 5, police said.

Van Zanten was among 2011 and 2012 Police Athletic League (PAL) scholarship winners. (See WestportNow June 1, 2012) And in 2005 as a Staples High School freshman, he was the subject of a school feature “15 Minutes of Fame: Lukas Van Zanten.” (See WestportNow Dec. 5, 2005)

I hope there is more to this story. Lukas has been a great young man for 23 years.
