As in previous years, Westport Schools Superintendent Elliot Landon, who earned $290,418 for 2013, leads the list of the school systems’ top 10 salaried employees, according to information released today by the Westport Public Schools. Image

Landon taking the top spot comes as no surprise since he is the highest paid of Connecticut’s 155 superintendents, according to the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents (CAPSS).

“He’s been holding that status for a long time,” said Donna Finello, executive administrator for CAPSS.

The average school superintendents’ salary in Connecticut is around $165,000, but CAPPS Executive Director Joseph Cirasuolo cautions against making comparisons. Cirasuolo has served as superintendent in Clinton and Wallingford.

“It all depends upon the wealth of the community, the size of the district, if there’s an expectation of the superintendent living in the community and the cost of the community,” Cirasuolo said. “He’s (Landon) well compensated and deservedly so.

“I have two grandchildren in the Westport school system, and from that perspective, he deserves what he’s making,” he added.

Landon has served as Westport superintendent since 1999. The average tenure of a superintendent in Connecticut is seven years, said Cirasuolo.

Lisabeth Comm, director of secondary education, Cynthia Gilchrest, director of elementary education, and Staples High School Principal John Dodig all tied for second place, each with an annual salary of $179,841.50.

Next of the list was Kris Szabo, principal of Coleytown Middle School, with annual pay of $162,524.50, followed by Susie Da Silva, principal of Kings Highway School, with a $157,765.50 annual salary.

The last four on the list are also tied. John Bayers, principal of the Green’s Farms, Director of Technology Natalie Carrignan, Saugatuck Elementary School Principal Julie Droller and Long Lots Elementary School Principal Michael (Rex) Jones each earned $158,188.50.
