Blizzard, Coastal Flood Warnings Issued

The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y. has issued a Blizzard Warning for Westport and area which is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Weather Service said snow accumulation of 18 to 24 inches can be expected during the storm with winds northeast 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Temperatures will fall into the 20s Friday evening and visibility will be one-quarter mile or less at times.

The Weather Service said the strongest winds and heaviest snow will occur Friday evening into Saturday morning.

“Heavy snow and winds will make for dangerous driving conditions with visibilities near zero in white-out conditions,” the Weather Service said. “In addition, some tree limbs will be downed, causing scattered power outages.”

Meanwhile, the Weather Service also issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Westport and area which is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Friday.

The Weather Service said to expect tides 3 to 5 feet above astronomical tides with 3 to 5 foot waves along Long Island Sound.

Flooding is likely during the times of high tide Friday evening between 9 and 11 p.m., it said

The Weather Service said widespread flooding of vulnerable shore roads and/or basements due to height of storm tide and wave action is possible.
