Arriving fire personnel at 67 Bayberry Lane found smoke coming from the first floor corner area of a two-story detached garage with an apartment above, said Capt. Brian Meadows.
Firefighters used hand tools to open up the wall and extinguished the fire, he said. Additional companies checked for any fire extension on the floor above.
Meadows said the occupant told arriving firefighters that prior to the fire he was thawing pipes. “He exited the garage and when he returned saw smoke coming from the wall and called 911,” he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshal’s office, Meadows said. “Residents are advised to not use a direct heat source such as open flame or torch when thawing pipes,” he said.
