A fire traced to a crawl space under a boiler caused little damage but forced a family in Westport’s Compo Beach area to spend the night elsewhere, the Fire Department said today.

Firefighters responded to a report of an odor of smoke in the basement of a home on Fairfield Avenue at 10:03 p.m. Tuesday and found smoke coming from an exterior wall at the front of the house, said Assistant Chief Larry Conklin.

The fire was found to be in a crawl space under the boiler and was quickly extinguished and structural damage was held to a minimum, he said.

Conklin said firefighters had to operate in wind chill temperatures close to zero. “The extreme cold could have hampered firefighting operations if the fire was not quickly extinguished,” he said.

The occupants of the house had to relocate to other premises for the remainder of the night, Conklin said.

Cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office and the Building Department, he said.
