Westport’s Compo Beach is set to be the site of two, back-to-back shivering dips New Year’s Day as two local groups hold annual morning plunges to raise funds for charities.
At 10 a.m., Team Mossman Triathlon Club will take the plunge to benefit Save the Children’s (STC) health and education programs.
While that group is still thawing out, the TI Polar Bears, which has raised more than $360,000 over the past six years for various charities, are scheduled to head into the water at 11 a.m. to raise money for United Cerebral Palsy of New York City.
According to STC spokesman Jeremy Soulliere, Team Mossman serves athletes of all ages and abilities in and around Connecticut, enabling them to achieve their athletic goals “in a stimulating, supportive and social environment.”
“The club educates and informs its members, having fun while participating in all the area has to offer for training and racing, to improve the sport,” he said.
According to Tom Patterson, who is heading up the Polar Bear plunge, United Cerebral Palsy of New York City is the city’s leading nonprofit “that provides direct services, technology and advocacy to children and adults,” about 14,000 families afflicted with cerebral palsy and other disabilities .
“They offer educational and vocational day programs to their participants and their families, medical clinics, recreational programs, employment opportunities and housing to thousands of individuals who would have few if any alternatives without the services provided by UCP of NYC,” said Patterson.
