High Wind Warning, Coastal Flood Watch Issued
For the second time in six days, the National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y. has issued a High Wind Warning for Westport and area. This one is in effect from 4 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Thursday.
At the same time, the Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Watch for the area for tonight. It said tidal departures 3 to 5 ft above astronomical tides could cause widespread flooding of vulnerable shore roads and/or basements due to storm tide and wave action around time of high tide. Road closures may be needed, it said. High tide is at 10:06 p.m.
Forecasters said the coastal storm could bring snow to much of the state beginning today around sundown that will turn into a mix of sleet, freezing rain and rain by Thursday morning. Much of the state could get snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches, with up to 6 inches in the northwest hills, they said.
The High Wind Warning, which replaced a High Wind Watch issued early Tuesday, said winds will be east 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph and could bring down trees and power lines.
“Winds of this magnitude could down trees and tree limbs, power lines and holiday decorations, and cause minor property damage,” the Weather Service said. “Numerous power outages will be possible.”
It was the third High Wind Warning for Westport since Storm Sandy on Oct. 29.
